After the success of his previous album released in 2018, Meelk is proud to present his new EP called "Catharsis PT.1". Expressing through his pieces his notion of "Catharsis", he offers us a journey between melodic and experimental Bass Music. By letting his emotions express themselves, giving them a support, a "stage" to represent themselves, Meelk delivers here a very intense and personal work. ___________________________________________________ The term "Catharsis" comes from the Greek meaning "purification" or "cleansing." Catharsis, is the evacuation, the expression of a feeling through the use of a medium (in this case the music). This in order to evacuate a burden, a tension that is at the origin of the inner self. Catharsis can take place in a very wide range of ways. On this EP project, Meelk wanted to express this through 2 different main research axes: The personal catharsis: -Aristotle- "Nothing is more powerful, than the rhythm and the songs of music, to imitate as truly as possible anger, kindness, courage, wisdom itself, and all those feelings of the soul, as well as all the feelings opposed to them. We see these same people, when they have resorted to the melodies that carry the soul out of itself, recovering their calm as if they had taken a remedy and a purgation". Music can indeed be presented as a transcription of the states of the soul and it is this transcription that heals these very states. Pleasure would then be linked to the release of certain feeling whose excessive concentration would be the cause of a disorder. In other words, musical catharsis would function on the principle of healing evil with evil and would therefore have the power to purify the human soul of its bad passions. For Meelk music has always been cathartic, but here he tries to consciously transcribe his torment, as an exploration of his inner world, paying homage to this source of inspiration. By letting his torment express themselves, giving them a support, a "stage" to represent themselves, Meelk delivers here a very personal and emotionally charged work. The notion of tension/resolution : The cathartic effect can also be created from a musical notion of tension/resolution. This can be generated in the harmony as well as in the narration of a piece. Indeed, by using a "dramatization" effect, the listener would be confronted with a situation of "great tension/resolution" leading to a cathartic effect. The 2 pieces presented here try to use this notion through the accomplishment of different techniques. |
